Theatrical Rights Worldwide, a musical theatre licensor, has teamed up with Sheri Sanders of Rock The Audition to create a selection of new rock catalog musicals with the goal to bridge the gap between popular music and musical theatre.

“This collection of musicals will draw from the experiences of a broad and diverse collection of artists and will seek to examine the creation, refinement, and historical context of their respective genres through the lens of marginalized voices,” Sanders said in a statement.

Sanders plans to arrange the music, featuring songs from artists such as Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Donna Summer, Prince, George Michael, Kurt Cobain, Tupac Shakur, and Biggie Smalls. The titles will be available for both professional and amateur licensing as full length productions.

President and CEO Steve Spiegel sees a demand from his buyers for musicals that connect audiences to the soundtrack of their lives.

“We are thrilled to be embarking on this amazing journey with Sheri Sanders and look forward to introducing a collection of vibrant, invigorating new works to immediately meet that need in the theatrical marketplace,” Spiegel said.

Sanders’ book, Rock The Audition, teaches actors how to prepare for and get cast in a rock musical. Since then, she has established an online training program of the same name. Her students have been featured in Broadway, Off-Broadway, and touring companies of Hamilton, Waitress, The Great Comet, Kinky Boots, Jersey Boys, Rock of Ages, American Idiot, Hairspray, Legally Blonde, and Wicked.

TRW licenses musicals such as The Addams Family, All Shook Up, Jersey Boys, The Color Purple, and Memphis to thousands of theatre organizations around the world.
