The production is helmed by Transport Group artistic director Jack Cummings III, who was approached by the show's composer, the late Mary Rodgers, about a full-scale revival following his acclaimed concert staging in 2013.

The whimsical musical comedy – a twist on "The Princess and the Pea" – features music by Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and a book by Barer. It first played Off-Broadway in 1959 before transferring to Broadway that same year, where it was nominated for five Tony Awards and famously made a bona fide star of its lead actress, Carol Burnett, as Princess Winnifred.
