Annaleigh Ashford, a Tony winner for her performance in You Can't Take It With You, plays the adorable, outspoken pooch in Sylvia, which officially opened Oct. 27 following previews that began Oct. 2, 2015. She is joined by two-time Tony winner Matthew Broderick as Sylvia's owner, who is going through a midlife crisis. Broderick's Emmy-winning wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, starred in the original Off-Broadway production of the Gurney play.
Daniel Sullivan directs the Broadway staging of the 1995 play about a married couple and their beloved dog Sylvia (who can talk to the audience, yell at a passing cat and flirt with a fellow canine named Bowser); the cast also stars Tony winner Julie White (Airline Highway) as Broderick's wife and Robert Sella (Stuff Happens, Sleepy Hollow, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) in a variety of roles, both male and female.
Cars, Kids and Career Changes: Sylvia Cast Shares Stories of Their Midlife Crises Sylvia, according to press notes, is about "what happens when a smart, sassy, captivating canine befriends a New Yorker in Central Park and changes his life—and his wife’s life—forever. This wonderful look into the complexities of love and commitment asks what it truly means to be devoted to your partner…and how do you choose between the love of your life and man’s best friend?"
The production has scenic design by Tony Award nominee David Rockwell, costume design by Academy Award winner Ann Roth, lighting design by Tony Award nominee Japhy Weideman, sound design by Peter Fitzgerald and music by Greg Pliska with wig and makeup design by Campbell Young Associates. Sylvia was produced by Jeffrey Richards, Jerry Frankel and Daryl Roth.
The original 1995 production starred Parker (as Sylvia), Blythe Danner and Charles Kimbrough, and ran 167 performances at Manhattan Theatre Club's Stage I.
