Stereophonic Extends on Broadway Until 2025

Get your ticket to the masquerade because Stereophonic is extending its gig on Broadway, again. The play’s composer Will Butler made the announcement at a special concert June 4 at the Bowery Electric in Manhattan. Stereophonic, which was going to close August 18, will now extend until January 5, 2025.

The play with music is written by David Adjmi and follows a 1970s rock band as they record their sophomore album over the course of a year and battle personal drama along the way. It was originally a limited engagement for 14 weeks at the Golden Theatre. The show then extended a first time for four weeks.

Stereophonic recently made history as the most Tony Award nominated play ever, with 13 nominations including Best Play. So this announcement marks the show's second extension and gives fans, and curious theatregoers, more time to see the show.

See footage from the June 4 concert below, as Butler and his band, Will Butler + Sister Squares, performed a song from Stereophonic called "Masquerade," accompanied by the show's sound designer Ryan Rumery and music director Justin Craig, plus special guests Amber Gray and Tony winner John Howard Gallagher Jr.

Stereophonic is notable for only featuring its original songs from Butler (a former member of Arcade Fire) as snippets throughout the show. That hasn't stopped its cast from recording a cast album, which features the show's songs in full, as well as outtakes that didn't make the show. The album is currently streaming, with a physical release available June 14.

The Stereophonic cast features Will Brill, Andrew R. Butler, Juliana Canfield, Eli Gelb, Tom Pecinka, Sarah Pidgeon, and Chris Stack.

As Adjmi told Playbill in a previous interview: “I definitely knew from the beginning that I wanted it to feel very granular. I wanted them to talk about very mundane things, because that is what a collaborative process is like. And even though people look really glamorous and really blown out on stage, I can channel this profound energy of when they're living their lives—doing laundry and frying an egg. I'm really interested in that duality. And I just didn't want to do a boilerplate depiction of rock stars.”

The show originally ran Off-Broadway at Playwrights Horizons in late 2023. Rave reviews and positive word of mouth led to an extension Off-Broadway and then a fast Broadway transfer, with the full cast reprising their roles.

The production is supported by understudies Cornelius McMoyler, Benjamin Anthony Anderson, Sofia Deler, and Lily Ganser. Casting is by Alaine Alldaffer and Taylor Williams.

The show is directed by Daniel Aukin and features costume designer Enver Chakartash, lighting designer Jiyoun Chang, sound designer Ryan Rumery, music director Justin Craig, and vocal coach Gigi Buffington.

The Broadway run is produced by Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Seaview, Sonia Friedman Productions, Linden Productions, and Ashley Melone & Nick Mills.
