Ring them bells! The 2023 Academy Award Nominations were released January 24, and theatrical talent of every shape and size has been recognized.

Stephanie Hsu received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once, marking her first Oscar nomination. Most recently seen on stage in the Broadway run of Be More Chill, Hsu is a stage favorite, creating the role of Karen the Computer in SpongeBob SquarePants and appearing in numerous experimental productions throughout New York City.

She is joined in the Best Supporting Actress category by Broadway alum Angela Bassett, nominated for her work in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which makes her the first performer to receive an Oscar nomination for their work in a Marvel franchise film. Brian Tyree Henry, most recently seen on Broadway in Lobby Hero, received a Supporting Actor nod for his work on Causeway, which he discussed with Playbill in late 2022.

In the leading performance categories, Broadway alums Austin Butler, Brendan Fraser, and Bill Nighy received Lead Actor nods for their performances Elvis, The Whale, and Living, respectively. Additionally, they're joined by Paul Mescal, currently performing in A Streetcar Named Desire in London's West End, nominated for his performance in Aftersun.

In the Lead Actress category, Cate Blanchett and Michelle Williams were recognized for their work on Tár and The Fabelmans, and Andrea Riseborough received a nomination for To Leslie following her homegrown consideration campaign.

Outside of the performance categories, Broadway creatives studded the nomination list, most notably Martin McDonagh, whose The Banshees of Inisherin received 9 total nominations, including Best Original Score, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Director, and Best Picture, in addition to four performance nominations. 

Similarly, Baz Luhrmann's biopic Elvis received 8 nominations, bringing in nominations for Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound, Best Cinematography, and Best Picture, in addition to Butler's Lead Actor nomination.

Tár, a theatrically adjacent film that follows an imaginary protege of Leonard Bernstein, brought in six nominations, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Director, and Best Picture, in addition to Blanchett's nod.

Samuel D. Hunter's The Whale received three nominations, including Fraser's Best Actor nod, a Supporting Actress nomination for Hong Chau, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. Based on Hunter's 2012 play, Playbill spoke with Hunter about the ways in which his personal life is embedded in the material last week.

Murder mystery film Glass Onion, which featured the final on screen appearances of theatrical legends Stephen Sondheim and Angela Lansbury, received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay; the film is resplendent with theatrical references, which Playbill revealed at the end of 2022.

Esteemed Pulitzer winning playwright Tony Kushner is eligible for two Oscars for his work on Stephen Spielberg's film The Fabelmans; Best Original Screenplay, and Best Picture.

The 95th Annual Academy Awards will be held March 12 in Los Angeles, and will be broadcast on ABC at 8 PM EST.
