Indigenous-feminist theatre company Spiderwoman Theater will present a three-week Midwest tour of Misdemeanor Dream beginning February 20.

Spiderwoman’s 16-member ensemble will take part in three residencies that will include the performance as well as community engagement experiences. The residencies will be hosted by the University of South Dakota (February 20-24), Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet, Minnesota, and Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin (February 27-March 2), and The Jungle Theater, Full Circle Theater, and Perpich Center for Arts Education in The Twin Cities (March 5-7).

Co-created by director Muriel Miguel, choreographer Penny Couchie, and voice choreographer Imelda Villalon, Misdemeanor Dream weaves stories in the original languages of the ensemble (as well as in English) to tell personal, family, and community stories of the artists, both contemporary and passed down.

The production is written and created by the all-Indigenous storytelling and performing ensemble: Sid Bobb, Penny Couchie, Animikiikwe Couchie-Waukey, Lisa Cromarty, Donna Couteau, Sharon Day, the late Tyree Giroux, Wolfen de Kastro, Niigaanipines, Marjolaine Mckenzie, Gloria Miguel, Darylina Powderface, Chingwe Padraig Sullivan, Henu Josephine Tarrant, and Imelda Villalon.

Each of the tour visits will include workshops for Native theatre and performance artists exploring the company’s signature “storyweaving” creation process as well as student-educator events featuring Artistic Director Miguel.

Prior to the tour, an invitation-only event celebrating the multi-disciplinary production will be presented at the Abrons Arts Center February 15 at 6 PM.

Misdemeanor Dream premiered at La MaMa in March 2022.
