To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, Jonathan Larson Grant recipient Jaime Lozano visited Playbill with his Familia—performers Robin de Jesús, Mauricio Martínez, and Florencia Cuenca—to perform for Playbill's Songwriter Series. Presented by Audible Theater, the series is dedicated to spotlighting emerging composers and features a new video every month.
The group presented three songs from Lozano's musical projects, including "My Father’s Name" from Songs by an Immigrant Vol. 2, which features music by by Lozano, and lyrics by Georgie Castillafeat; "So That I Can Live" from Frida, the musical, which features music by Lozano and lyrics by Neena Beber; and "La Cumbia Violeta" from Desparecidas, which features music by Lozano and lyrics by Lozano and Cuenca
In addition to the vocal stylings of Jesús, Martínez, and Cuenca, Lozano played piano and bajo quinto guitar alongside Yahir Montes on guitar, Lexi Bodick on bass, and Mary Spencer Knapp on accordion for a special appearance.
Lozano, who recently signed with Concord Music Publishing, has a number of projects in the pipeline, including a digital release of Songs by an Immigrant Vol. 2 September 15. Lozano & The Familia will be celebrating the release of the album with a concert at the Lincoln Center's David Rubenstein Atrium as part of his 2023 residency, and he and Florencia Cuenca will perform their acclaimed project "Broadway en Spanglish" with mariachi Real de México at Joe's Pub on October 8th.
