Songbird, written by Michael Kimmel (The Last Goodbye) with music and lyrics by Lauren Pritchard (Spring Awakening), has been added to Two River Theater's current season.
Directed by Gaye Taylor Upchurch (The Last Match, Animal), the Nashville-set musical will play the Red Bank, New Jersey, venue June 9–July 1. Songbird drops Chekhov’s The Seagull into a bar in Nashville, where some country music dreams are realized, while others languish.
Songbird replaces Regina Taylor’s Oo-Bla-Dee, with original music by Diedre L. Murray, which was scheduled for the same dates. The production will move to the theatre's 25th anniversary season in 2018–2019. The change will allow the show's director, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, the chance to direct Othello for New York's Public Theater Shakespeare in the Park season this summer.
