Sherie Rene Scott Says Prison Drama Whorl Inside a Loop Is Broadway Bound | Playbill

News Sherie Rene Scott Says Prison Drama Whorl Inside a Loop Is Broadway Bound According to OUT.com, the acclaimed Off-Broadway drama Whorl Inside a Loop will soon be transferring to Broadway. The news, reported by Michael Musto, came directly from Sherie Rene Scott, who co-created and starred in the play about prison life and the power of theatre.

"We were working it out today. It’s moving with a star," Scott told Musto, implying that she would not be performing in the Broadway production.

When reached for comment, Scott told Playbill.com: "Michael Mayer and I merely expressed that we’re hoping to move the show to Broadway and that we’re considering all options, including the possibility of a star playing the role of The Volunteer." She went on to say that Musto has long-been a wonderful supporter of the show.

Whorl Inside a Loop, a new play by Dick Scanlan and Scott, officially opened at Off-Broadway's Second Stage Theatre Aug. 27, following previews that began Aug. 4. The premiere was co-directed by Michael Mayer and Scanlan — the creative team behind the Tony-nominated Everyday Rapture. Second Stage Theatre has not been able to confirm the rumored Broadway transfer.

Inspired by Scott's real-life experiences, the play follows a celebrity actress into a men's maximum security prison during her community service. Unexpectedly, she forms a close bond with the inmates and through teaching them theatre, gives them a voice to express themselves and their powerful stories.

Scott's previous show, Everyday Rapture, also had its world premiere at Second Stage Theatre, where it opened in 2009 before transferring to Broadway the following year and was nominated for two Tony Awards.

"Working with Sherie, Dick, and Michael on Everyday Rapture was one of the most fulfilling and enjoyable experiences of my career and I am thrilled to welcome them back with this new play," said Second Stage artistic director Carole Rothman in an earlier statement. "Sherie and Dick have written a powerful and surprising ensemble work – timely, moving, and full of the honesty, insight, and humor that make their combined voice such a singular delight."
