The Venn diagram of television lovers and theatre fans continues to grow! September sees a new series from Modern Family creator Steven Levitan starring Rachel Bloom (Netflix's Crazy Ex-Girfriend); Peter Hermann and Naomi Watts in Prime Video's horror movie Goodnight Mommy; two previously released blockbusters hit the streamers; and more.
Here's a look at what's streaming this month.
Netflix
Blonde (September 28)
Andrew Dominik's Marilyn Monroe biopic has dragged itself out of "development hell" for a Netflix release. Based on the novel by Joyce Carol Oates, the movie reimagines the life of model-actor Marilyn Monroe from her volatile childhood through her rise to stardom.
The movie has suffered delays credited to financing and its NC-17 rating (which has also stirred controversy). The movie is written and directed by Dominik, with Knives Out actor Ana de Armas as the pop culture icon, along with Bobby Cannavale, Adrien Brody, Julianne Nicholson, Xavier Samuel, and Evan Williams.
Hulu
Reboot (September 20)
This upcoming eight-episode comedy series comes from Modern Family’s Steven Levitan and stars stage favorites Judy Greer and Rachel Bloom, along with Krista Marie Yu, Keegan-Michael Key, Johnny Knoxville, Paul Reiser, and Calum Worthy. The series follows the fictional reboot (by Hulu, how meta) of an early 2000s family sitcom which forces its dysfunctional cast to reunite. The show premieres on the streamer September 20 with three episode; additional episodes will drop weekly.
Reboot is produced by Steven Levitan Productions and Twentieth Television. Levitan executive produces alongside Danielle Stokdyk and Jeff Morton.
The Eyes of Tammy Faye (August 1)
“Tammy Faye, what’d you do?!” The acclaimed movie, which had its theatrical release in September 2021, hits the streamer August 1. Oscar winner Jessica Chastain stars as American evangelist and singer Tammy Faye Bakker, along with Tony winners Andrew Garfield as Jim Bakker and Cherry Jones as Tammy’s mom, Rachel.
Exploring the Bakkers' life as they built an evangelical TV empire, the movie explores Tammy Faye’s own beliefs and her refusal to bend to the patriarchal whims of the network bigwigs... that is, until a scandal brought it all crumbling down. Rounding out the cast are Fredric Lehne, Louis Cancelmi, Sam Jaeger, Gabriel Olds, Mark Wystrach, and Vincent D’Onofrio. Upon its release, the movie received two Academy Awards, Best Actress (for Chastain), and Best Makeup and Hairstyling (Linda Dowds, Stephanie Ingram, and Justin Raleigh).
The Eyes of Tammy Faye is written by Abe Sylvia (Dead to Me, Nurse Jackie) with direction by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick). Chastain produces, alongside Kelly Carmichael, Rachel Shane, and Gigi Pritzker.

The trailer features noteworthy jump scares, as the children snoop around the house and disobey their mother's new rules.
The movie is directed by Matt Sobel with a script by Kyle Warren and producing By V.J. Guibal, Nicolas Brigaud-Robert, Joshua Astrachan, and David Kaplan.
Annie (2014)
The 2014 musical adaptation of Annie—starring Quvenzhané Wallis as the title character, along with Cameron Diaz, Rose Byrne, and Jamie Foxx— begins streaming September 1 on Prime Video's free video service, Freevee. Despite releasing to generally poor reception, the movie received two Golden Globe Award nominations for Best Actress in a Motion Picture - Comedy or Musical (for Wallis) and Best Original Song (for "Opportunity" by Greg Kurstin, Will Gluck, Sia). Along with the original song, the movie features remixed hits from the original Broadway score, such as, "It's A Hard Knock Life," "Tomorrow," and "Little Girls."
Directed by Will Gluck, the film features a screenplay by Gluck and Aline Brosh McKenna based on the musical stage play Annie with a book by Thomas Meehan, music by Charles Strouse, and lyrics by and Martin Charnin.
