On November 6, stars of the stage and screen gathered at Broadway’s Schoenfeld Theatre for Make Believe on Broadway, a benefit gala for the Only Make Believe foundation, which creates and performs interactive theatre for children in hospitals and care facilities.

The evening honored Tony nominee Josh Groban (Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812) with the Sir Ian McKellen Award for his work in philanthropy and activism.

Cecily Strong, a cast member of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, hosted the event, which raised $1.14 million.

Among the guests were Lena Hall (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Brad Oscar (Something Rotten), Montego Glover (Les Misérables), Sierra Boggess (Phantom of the Opera), Bryan Terrell Clark (Hamilton), Betsy Wolfe (Waitress), Robert Cuccioli (Jekyll & Hyde), Ramin Karimloo (Anastasia), and Frozen star Greg Hildreth.

The gala was co-directed by playwright Joe DiPietro (Memphis) and Oscar, with musical direction by Patrick Vaccariello.

Only Make Believe (OMB) is dedicated to nurturing children’s imaginations during the healing process. The organization has served more than 52,000 children since 1999 and has performed in more than 55 hospitals and care facilities in the New York City and Washington, D.C., areas.
