The New York premiere of Abingdon Theatre Company's Queens Girl in the World opened April 10 at Theatre 5 in Theatre Row. Felicia Curry stars in the one-person play by Caleen Sinette Jennings. The production, recently extended, plays through May 8.
The coming-of-age tale centers on the bright-eyed, brown-skinned Jacqueline Marie Butler, who transfers from a middle-class upbringing in 1950s Queens to a progressive, predominantly Jewish private school in Greenwich Village.
The production is led by director Paige Hernandez with costumes by Mika Eubanks, lighting design by Daisy Long, projection design by Lisa Renkel, and set design by Teresa Williams.
The production will include Bernstein’s incidental music for Lillian Hellman’s adaptation of The Lark, and Menotti’s The Unicorn, The Gorgon, and The Manticore.
Based on the novel and film by Frank Cottrell Boyce, the new musical will reunite Guettel with Tony-winning Light in the Piazza director Bartlett Sher.
