It’s official. Tony and Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles will star as Mary Magdalene in the upcoming Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, NBC has just announced.
Bareilles will star opposite the previously announced John Legend, who will play the title role.
Executive produced by Superstar’s composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, as well as Marc Platt, Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, Legend, Mike Jackson, Ty Stiklorius, and Alex Rudzinski, the concert version of the musical will feature rock icon Alice Cooper as King Herod.
The live concert version will air Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018. Staged in front of a live audience at the Marcy Armory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, British theatre director David Leveaux will helm the production.
“It’s an absolute thrill to have a Tony-nominated composer as Mary Magdalene,” Lloyd Webber said in a statement. “Not only is Sara Bareilles a brilliant songwriter and lyricist, she commanded the Broadway stage in her show Waitress. Being able to write and star in that musical, on Broadway, twice, is something very few people can say they have on their CV.”
Bareilles is set to return to the starring role of Jenna in her musical Waitress beginning January 16 through February 25. She was nominated for a Tony for her score of the musical.
