Executive produced by Superstar’s composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, as well as Marc Platt, Craig Zadan, Neil Meron, Legend, Mike Jackson, Ty Stiklorius, and Alex Rudzinski, the concert version of the musical will feature rock icon Alice Cooper as King Herod.

The live concert version will air Easter Sunday, April 1, 2018. Staged in front of a live audience at the Marcy Armory in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, British theatre director David Leveaux will helm the production.

“It’s an absolute thrill to have a Tony-nominated composer as Mary Magdalene,” Lloyd Webber said in a statement. “Not only is Sara Bareilles a brilliant songwriter and lyricist, she commanded the Broadway stage in her show Waitress. Being able to write and star in that musical, on Broadway, twice, is something very few people can say they have on their CV.”

Bareilles is set to return to the starring role of Jenna in her musical Waitress beginning January 16 through February 25. She was nominated for a Tony for her score of the musical.

Legend earned his first Broadway credit as a producer on the Tony-winning Jitney just last year. He also penned a song for the recently opened SpongeBob SquarePants, The Broadway Musical.

Jesus Christ Superstar bowed on Broadway in 1971 and was nominated for five Tony Awards including Best Original Score by Lloyd Webber and Rice. The show has received three Broadway revivals in 1977, 2000, and 2012—the latter two of which were both nominated for the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.
