Samuel D. Hunter's Obie-winning A Bright New Boise premieres Off-Broadway January 31.

The dark comedy, directed by Oliver Butler, is a part of Hunter's Premiere Residency at Signature. Opening night is scheduled for February 21.

Playing through March 12 in the Pershing Square Signature Center, A Bright New Boise is an early work from the MacArthur Grant Genius, whose play The Whale was adapted for the screen starring Brendan Fraser.

The Signature cast includes Anna Baryshnikov as Anna, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio as Alex, Eva Kaminsky as Pauline, Peter Mark Kendall as Will, and Angus O'Brien as Leroy.

A Bright New Boise centers on Will, a young man who flees his Idaho hometown in search of a fresh start and a new community, free of the baggage of his youth. Ideas of divinity and intimacy, which can be seen throughout Hunter's body of work, feature heavily in the piece.

The creative team includes scenic designer Wilson Chin, costume designer April M. Hickman, lighting designer Jen Schriever, sound designer Christopher Darbassie, projection and video designer Stefania Bulbarella, and Caparelliotis Casting.

Said Artistic Director Paige Evans in an earlier statement, “I saw A Bright New Boise when it premiered in 2011, and the play feels even more resonant today. Set in a big box chain store where workers have few opportunities and one character awaits rapture, it’s a fundamentally American play. Sam writes about religion with curiosity, empathy, and compassion, unlike many American playwrights.”
