Complete casting has been announced for the North American tour of The Kite Runner, set to launch April 9 in Tempe, Arizona. The full itinerary includes an additional 20 cities, including Chicago and Washington, D.C.
Based on Khaled Hosseini’s internationally best-selling novel and adapted by Matthew Spangler, The Kite Runner follows a young boy named Amir living in Kabul, Afghanistan, who finds ways of escaping the terrible events unfolding around him through to adulthood as he searches for atonement in an exploration of father-son relationships and friendships.
The tour will star Ramzi Khalaf (The Rat Trap, We Live in Cairo) as Amir, with Raji Ahsan, Danish Farooqui, Shahzeb Zahid Hussain, Hassan Nazari-Robati, Haythem Noor, James Rana, Jonathan Shaboo, Kevin Stevens, Wiley Naman Strasser, Awesta Zarif, Jade Ziane, and Sophie Zmorrod joining in various roles.
Salar Nader, the musician who accompanied the Broadway production, will reprise his role as tabla player for the tour.
The Kite Runner premiered at the San Jose Repertory Theater in 2009, prior to several U.K. productions, including two 2017 West End engagements. The play then came to New York for a strictly limited run in the summer of 2022.
Giles Croft directs, having previously directed the production in the U.K., and is joined on the creative team by scenic and costume designer Barney George, lighting designer Charles Balfour, sound designer Drew Baumohl, projection designer William Simpson, composer and musical supervisor Jonathan Girling, movement director Kitty Winter, the Wojcik casting team, and cultural advisor and script consultant Humaira Ghilzai. John Fortunato will be production stage manager.
The work is produced by Victoria Lang, Ryan Bogner, and Tracey McFarland of Broadway & Beyond Theatricals; and Jayne Baron Sherman, in association with UK Productions Ltd. and Flying Entertainment Ltd/Kilimanjaro Group Ltd. Daryl Roth serves as executive producer.
