Peppermint broke boundaries as the first out trans woman cast in a principal role on Broadway when she made her Broadway debut this past summer in Head Over Heels, the new musical set to songs by The Go-Go’s. As the oracle Pythio, Peppermint brings a mysticism to the production.
Glammed up and be-glittered, she also brings an over-the-top energy perfect for the musical that mashes that ’80s vibe of Go-Go’s hits against a backdrop of a faux Renaissance kingdom that runs on “The Beat.” But contrary to other pump-up playlists artists have shared with Playbill, Peppermint turns the tables for this week’s Playbill Mixtape, finding her power and intensity in the quiet.
“From the day I moved to New York City and stepped out of the door and partied until the moment I got home, I eat, slept, and breathed NYC showgirl nightlife: It's loud music, drag bars, nightclubs and after-hours discos 24/7,” she begins, “but when it comes to my pre-show routine in my Broadway dressing room, it’s a very peaceful environment, my sanctuary fantasy. Soft music. Dim lighting. Door closed. And this playlist.”
