A Delicate Balance, Starring Glenn Close and John Lithgow, Opens on Broadway; Curtain Call
Directed by Tony Award winner Pam MacKinnon, A Delicate Balance stars three-time Tony Award winner Close (Sunset Boulevard, Death and the Maiden) and two-time Tony Award winner Lithgow (The Changing Room, Sweet Smell of Success). The cast also includes Tony Award winner Lindsay Duncan (Private Lives, Les Liaisons Dangereuses), Bob Balaban (Plaza Suite, The Inspector General), Clare Higgins (Vincent in Brixton, Sweet Bird of Youth) and Martha Plimpton (Top Girls, The Coast of Utopia).
Here's how the production is billed: "In A Delicate Balance, Agnes (Glenn Close) and Tobias (John Lithgow), a long-married couple, must maintain their equilibrium as over the course of a weekend they welcome home their 36-year-old daughter (Martha Plimpton) after the collapse of her fourth marriage, and give shelter to their best friends (Bob Balaban and Clare Higgins), all the while tolerating Agnes’ alcoholic sister Claire (Lindsay Duncan)." The original Tony-nominated 1966 production starred Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn, while the 1973 film starred Katharine Hepburn, Paul Scofield and Lee Remick. A 1996 Broadway revival of A Delicate Balance, starring Rosemary Harris, Elaine Stritch and George Grizzard, was a critical and popular success, winning the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.
