Broadway News Peter Morgan's Patriots Sets 2024 Broadway Bow

Michael Stuhlbarg and Will Keen will lead the story of Vladimir Putin's rise to power.

Patriots, a new play by Peter Morgan (The Crown) is set for a limited 12-week engagement on Broadway this season. Previews will begin April 1 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre ahead of an April 22 opening night. See the trailer above.

The work premiered in 2022 with a sold-out run at London's Almeida Theatre, before transferring to the Noël Coward Theatre for a West End engagement. Tony nominee and Almeida Artistic Director Rupert Goold (Ink) is at the helm.

Michael Stuhlbarg (The Pillowman) will return to Broadway for the first time in nearly 20 years to play Boris Berezovsky. Original London cast member Will Keen will reprise his Olivier-winning performance as Vladimir Putin, and Luke Thallon will join them as Roman Abramovich. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.

Patriots recounts the story of Vladimir Putin's rise to power after the fall of the Soviet Union. Billionaire Boris Berezovsky supports Putin's political ascent until it threatens his own reign, sparking near-Shakespearean conflict between the two men.

“For 20 years, Peter Morgan has pioneered a new mode of storytelling to illuminate our world," says producer Sonia Friedman in a statement. "No other writer wrings so much human drama out of historical events, but Patriots is his most urgent and essential play to date—an incisive deep-dive into 30 years of Russia’s past in search of its horrifying and harrowing present, something that should concern us all. Its London premiere at the Almeida and in the West End repeatedly seemed to reflect that day’s headlines and, with the world at a crossroads in 2024, it feels more immediate than ever."

The creative team includes set designer Miriam Buether, co-costume designers Deborah Andrews and Miriam Buether, lighting designer Jack Knowles, sound designer and composer Adam Cork, movement director Polly Bennett, and projection designer Ash J Woodward. Casting is by Jim Carnahan. TT Partners is the production's general manager.
