Bianca Leigh, currently starring as Mary's Chaperone in Broadway's Oh, Mary!, is bringing her 2012 solo musical Busted back for a one-night-only performance August 25 at the Laurie Beechman Theatre. With that venue set to shutter sometime this month, the performance could be among the final to take the Beechman stage.
The work transports audiences back to 1987 when Leigh had a "misunderstanding" with law enforcement as a stock market crash befell the world. With songs by Tony winner Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q), Obie winners Taylor Mac and Ellen Maddow, Jeff Domoto, Super Buddha, Matty Pritchard and Isam Rum, and William TN Hall, the musical sees Leigh revisiting her past as a young Trans woman who dreams of becoming a Shakespearean actor, only to find herself a high-priced dominatrix.
"I was hoping to workshop a new version of Busted at The Laurie Beechman Theatre in the 2024-2025 season," says Leigh in a statement. "When it was announced that the Beechman was closing, I knew that I had to seize the opportunity to perform on this iconic stage one last time."
Leigh's past credits include The Nap, Tales of the City The Musical: The Concert, The Lily's Revenge, Trans Scripts, and Man in Love. On screen, she's been seen in Transamerica and Law & Order: SVU.
Busted premiered at the Beechman in 2012. Her play MBJrT was part of Kansas City Rep's Monday Night Playwright Series in 2018.
