A new film version of Little Shop of Horrors, featuring direction by Greg Berlanti, is in the works, according to

The movie musical from Warner Bros. will feature a script by Matthew Robinson and is described as “a fresh version of the 30-year old Frank Oz-directed film.” The Oz film, which debuted in 1986, was based on the Off-Broadway musical that featured a score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, who penned the screenplay for the motion picture. That movie musical co-starred Rick Moranis and Ellen Greene, the latter reprising her critically acclaimed Off-Broadway role as Audrey.

Marc Platt (Wicked) will produce the new film. No timetable has been announced.

Little Shop of Horrors is based on the 1960 cult movie of the same name. The musical version debuted Off-Broadway at WPA Theatre in 1982 starring Lee Wilkoff and Greene in a role that would become her signature. A Broadway production was mounted in 2003 co-starring Hunter Foster and Kerry Butler. Greene revisited the role opposite Jake Gyllenhaal in July 2015 in a series of sold-out, critically acclaimed concerts at New York's City Center.

The musical concerns down-on-his-luck plant-shop worker Seymour Krelborn, who gains fame from a man-eating plant while pursuing a doomed romance with his lovable co-worker Audrey.

Berlanti is a writer, director, and producer who co-wrote and produced Green Lantern and directed the comedy Life As We Know It.
