Composer/lyricist/bookwriter Holly Gewandter, director Darren Katz, choreographer Jennifer Weber, associate musical director Ian Axness and a cast of eight performers will "explore the visual storytelling aspect of this gender-twisted, cross-dressed, cross-cast new musical based on the fairytale classic," according to press notes.

The ten-day residency will culminate in a presentation open to the public June 6.

In Gewandter’s reimagining of the romantic fable, Cinderella "goes to the ball disguised as a man, and the Princess falls in love with her. This groundbreaking love story between two women who risk everything for each other ultimately delivers its timely message – 'Lovers all deserve to have their Happily Ever Afters.'"

“MASS MoCA’s residency program offers a unique opportunity for us to develop specific sections of the show,” stated creator Gewandter. “We’ll be focused on the opening, ball scenes and ‘quest’ sequence,” added director Katz.

“Even after all these years,” Gewandter said, “although there have been a number of plays and musicals addressing gay male issues, there have been precious few depictions on stage of lesbian relationships. A musical with two women falling in love as its central narrative is long overdue. I’m very excited to work with Darren and Jenn to refocus the story in a way that questions society’s assumptions about gender.” Seating for the public performance will be on a first-come, first-served basis.
