Muriel’s Wedding The Musical, the new theatre production based on the 1994 Australian film comedy that starred Toni Collette in her breakout role, has set a March 2019 Melbourne premiere at Her Majesty’s Theatre, prior to returning to Sydney in July for an encore engagement at the Lyric Theatre.
P.J. Hogan, the film’s original screenwriter, adapted and updated his work for the stage musical, which had its world premiere at Sydney Theatre Company in 2017. The musical’s score incorporates ABBA pop hits alongside original songs by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall.
Director Simon Phillips is joined on the creative team by set and costume designer Gabriela Tylesova, choreographer Andrew Hallsworth, lighting designer Trent Suidgeest, sound designer Michael Waters, music supervisor Guy Simpson, and musical director Isaac Hayward.
Casting will be announced at a later date. Tickets go on sale September 20 for the Melbourne premiere.
Producer Carmen Pavlovic said, “I am thrilled to bring this new Australian musical to Melbourne after our sold-out premiere Sydney season last year. Muriel’s Wedding The Musical brings one of Australia’s most iconic and loved films to the stage. This is a brash musical with a very big heart featuring award winning music by Kate Miller-Heidke and Keir Nuttall.”
Pavlovic is also ushering her Australian-born musical King Kong to Broadway this fall.
