Classic Arts News Met Opera Will Stream Performances Via New Streaming Service

The service will make the opera companies cinema simulcasts available at home and on demand in limited markets.

The Metropolitan Opera is opening its doors to the world.

The famed opera company has announced a new streaming service, The Met: Live at Home. The platform will allow audiences to watch the Met's series of live simulcasts from any device in the world. The service is the latest addition to the companies Live in HD program, which has brought opera to movie theaters in the United States and Canada since 2006.

Location services technology and geo-fencing will determine the availability of streams in the United States and Canada, will priority access given to those who do not live near participating movie theaters. In countries that do not have participating cinemas, the simulcasts will be made available nationwide. Since the Live in HD program began, nearly 30 million people have purchased tickets to see simulcasts in cinemas. The streaming service will expand their reach to an additional 171 countries, in addition to the 50+ countries that currently receive cinema transmissions. The price of Live at Home transmissions, including unlimited free viewings during a seven-day window, will be either $10 or $20, depending on the country.

The Met: Live at Home lineup will include all ten productions in the cinema series. Multiple subtitle languages will be made available, including English, Spanish, and French. The first transmission will take place on October 22 with a performance of the Met’s new production of Cherubini’s Medea, starring soprano Sondra Radvanovsky. Tickets for Live at Home streams will be available October 17.
