Theatrical licensor Music Theatre International has acquired the rights to Mean Girls worldwide. Adapted from the 2004 film, the musical premiered on Broadway in April 2018, going on to receive 12 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical.

Mean Girls tells the story of Cady Heron, a teenage girl who finds herself in a suburban Illinois public high school after years of being home-schooled on the African savanna. Confronted with the animalistic social order of American teenagers, Cady devises a plan to topple the school's queen bee Regina George and her cohorts: The Plastics.

The show features a book by Tina Fey (based on her screenplay), music by Jeff Richmond, and lyrics by Nell Benjamin. The Broadway production was directed and choreographed by Book of Mormon Tony winner Casey Nicholaw.

"I'm thrilled that Mean Girls will become available to school, community, and regional theatres, because those are my favorite kinds of theaters," said Fey in a statement. "I can't wait to see diverse ensembles around the country make the show their own."

"We have already received countless inquiries from producers around the world at all levels—regional theatres, community theatres, universities, high schools—for the simple reason that the show delivers, both artistically and as box office gold," added MTI President and CEO Drew Cohen. "While remaining true to the beloved film and its now-classic characters, Tina Fey, Jeff Richmond, and Nell Benjamin have brilliantly adapted the material for the stage and for today's audiences. Importantly, their work also benefits the entire cast, who have so many opportunities to shine as individuals and as part of a robust ensemble."

With Mean Girls continuing its run on Broadway and a national tour scheduled to kick off this fall, a date for the show's licensing availability has not yet been determined. For more information, visit MTIShows.com.
