Royal Family Productions will present a private industry reading of the new musical Abril May 11.
Directed by Emily Maltby, the cast will include Gina Naomi Baez (Only Murders in the Building), Bárbara López, Francisca Muñoz (The Gardens of Anuncia), Eliseo Román (In the Heights), Analise Scarpaci (Mrs. Doubtfire), Jodi Stevens (Jekyll and Hyde), and three-time Tony nominee Mary Testa (Oklahoma!)
Abril, which
features music and lyrics by Baez and a book by Baez and Chris Henry (Women on Fire: Stories From the Frontlines), centers on a young Latine teenager who just beat cancer. As she returns
to high school, she deals with bullying, authoritarian figures who are
more interested in controlling than helping, and a beloved drama teacher
with a dark secret.
The upcoming reading will also have music direction, orchestrations, and arrangements by Benjamin Doyle. Kyle Cohn serves as stage manager.
