A new adaptation of the classic Sophocles tragedy Oedipus, written and directed by Robert Icke, will open in the West End in the fall.
Olivier winners Mark Strong (A View From the Bridge, The Long Firm) and Lesley Manville (Ghosts, The Crown) will star as, respectively, Oedipus and Jocasta. Performances will begin October 4 at Wyndham’s Theatre. Additional casting and creative team members will be announced at a later date.
Icke’s production, originally presented in Dutch at Internationaal Theater Amsterdam and subsequently at the Edinburgh International Festival, is set on election night. The polls predict a landslide victory, but everything is about to change.
Director Icke (1984, The Doctor) previously reimagined another Ancient Greek tragedy, Oresteia.
