A new adaptation of the classic Sophocles tragedy Oedipus, written and directed by Robert Icke, begins performances in the West End October 4 at Wyndham's Theatre.

Olivier winners Mark Strong (A View From the Bridge, The Long Firm) and Lesley Manville (Ghosts, The Crown) star as, respectively, Oedipus and Jocasta in the limited engagement, which will officially open October 15.

The company also features Samuel Brewer as Teiresias, Michael Gould as Creon, Sara Hazemi as Lichas, Gary McDonald as Driver, Bhasker Patel as Corin, Phia Saban as Antigone, Jordan Scowen as Eteocles, June Watson as Merope, and James Wilbraham as Polyneices, with ensemble members and understudies Jim Creighton, Derek Elroy, Celia Nelson, and Jake Rory.

Icke’s production, originally presented in Dutch at Internationaal Theater Amsterdam and subsequently at the Edinburgh International Festival, is set on election night. The polls predict a landslide victory, but everything is about to change.

The London staging also has set design by Hildegard Bechtler, costume design by Wojciech Dziedzic, lighting design by Natasha Chivers, sound design by Tom Gibbons, video design by Tal Yarden, and casting by Julia Horan.

Director Icke (1984, The Doctor) previously reimagined another Ancient Greek tragedy, Oresteia.

Sonia Friedman Productions produces. Performances are scheduled to continue through January 4, 2025.

Another production of Oedipus will play London's The Old Vic next year, led by Academy Award winner Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Olivier winner Indira Varma (Present Laughter).
