West End and Broadway actor and director Maria Friedman will perform a concert at the Palace Theatre in Stamford, Connecticut, September 24, part of Orchestra Lumos' annual gala. The evening, which will pay tribute to late songwriters Stephen Sondheim, Marvin Hamlisch, and Michel Legrand, will be Friedman's sole North American performance this season.
Friedman will be joined by music director and pianist Todd Ellison and vocalists Ross Lekites (Tina) and Lewis Cleale (The Book of Mormon), along with young area artists. The evening will also open Orchestra Lumos' season, which includes 11 mainstage performances.
A three-time Olivier winner, Friedman's stage credits include leading the original London productions of Sunday in the Park With George, Ragtime, Passion, and The Witches of Eastwick, among others. She played the Narrator in the screen version of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and made her Broadway debut in 2005's The Woman in White. Friedman also has an illustrious career as a director, and will be at the helm for New York Theatre Workshop's upcoming Off-Broadway revival of Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along, starring Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez, which begins performances later this year.
