Artistic director Dennis Garnhum will direct the new musical, which will be presented Jan. 19-Feb. 28, 2016, in Theatre Calgary's Max Bell Theatre in Arts Commons.
The cast will feature Sarah Caraher in the title role of the Little Prince, Adam Brazier as The Pilot, Mamma Mia!'s Louise Pitre as The Snake and Elicia MacKenzie as The Rose.
The ensemble comprises Chelsey Duplak, Kevin Forestell, Julio Fuentes, Jocelyn Gauthier, Keely Hutton, Joe Matheson, Andrew McAllister, Jennie Neumann, Alexander Nicoll, Nicole Norsworthy, Justin Raisbeck, Yemie Sonuga and Jena VanElslander.
Based on the book by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, The Little Prince is described as "a tender tale of love, loneliness, friendship, and imagination. When a disenchanted pilot crashes his airplane in the middle of the Sahara desert, he meets a mysterious young prince from a distant asteroid who tells the story of his long journey to Earth – and helps the pilot open his heart again."
The production will also have choreography by Lisa Stevens and musical direction by Elizabeth Baird.
After an inaugural staging at the Lyric Theatre (Belfast) in 2011, The Little Prince adapters Lloyd Webber and Reid have significantly developed and expanded the musical.
The book has been musicalized several times previously, including on Broadway as The Little Prince and the Aviator (1981) and on film as "The Little Prince" (1974) with a score by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe.
