Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Universal's sequel to the 2008 blockbuster Mamma Mia! (based on the stage hit of the same name), earned $34,380,000 during July 20–22, the film's debut weekend.
Only the Denzel Washington action film The Equalizer 2 took in more. Others in the top five included Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Incredibles 2.
The new movie, written and directed by Ol Parker, tells two stories: the backstory of Donna and the Dynamos and the path that led to Donna’s life on the Greek island Kalokairi, as well as as what happens when her daughter Sophie prepares to welcome a child of her own.
Several members from the original movie's cast, including Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, and Dominic Cooper, return for the sequel. Joining them are a handful of new faces, including Lily James as young Donna, Cher as Donna’s mother Ruby, Andy García, and stage favorite Jessica Keenan Wynn.
Some ABBA songs heard in the original (including “Dancing Queen,” “SOS,” and “Mamma Mia”) work their way back to the screen, though the set list also includes tunes from the Swedish pop group not included in either the stage musical or film, such as “Angel Eyes,” “Fernando,” and “The Name of the Game.”
