Lucas Hedges, who currently stars in Broadway’s The Waverly Gallery, may have been at The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to promote his new movie Ben Is Back, but his interview devolved into a Broadway-style performance anyway.

The Oscar nominee says he likes to sing from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats as part of his current pre-show ritual. ”I've started singing a lot of Cats before the shows,” he confessed. “It's a very dark play, and I mostly do dark movies, but there's a part of me deep down inside that just wants to move. I find that Cats is in some respects the purest form of articulating that inner movement or inner dialogue that doesn't always get to go above the surface.

“I run around and dance it and sing it occasionally. I like Rum Tum Tugger. Gus the Theatre Cat is a good one.”

Late Show pianist Jon Batiste just happens to know “Rum Tum Tugger,” and Colbert goaded Hedges into performing on the spot.

“I can't tell if this is my worst nightmare or the dream I've been waiting for this moment my entire life.”

Watch him sing and dance the number in the video below. No word yet if this will land him a spot on the ever-growing roster for the Cats movie.
