June 5 marks the 39th anniversary of the opening of The Music Man at the New York City Center, in a production that starred Tony winner Dick Van Dyke as the titular traveling conman-turned-music professor, Harold Hill.
Directed and choreographed by Tony winner Michael Kidd, the production also starred Meg Bussert as Marian Paroo, a young Christian Slater as Winthrop, Carol Arthur as Mrs. Paroo, and Iggie Wolfington (who previously portrayed Marcellus in the original 1957 Broadway run) as Mayor Shinn.
