Ragtime, the musical adaptation of the novel by E.L. Doctorow, opened January 18,1998, at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts. The production played 27 previews and 834 performances before closing January 16, 2000, earning 13 Tony Award nominations and winning four, including Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score.

Ragtime tells the story of an African-American family, a Jewish immigrant family, and a wealthy suburban WASP family in turn-of-the-century America. The musical features music by Stephen Flaherty, lyrics by Lynn Ahrens, and a book by Terrence McNally.

The musical starred Brian Stokes Mitchell as Coalhouse Walker Jr., Audra McDonald as Sarah, Marin Mazzie as Mother, Peter Friedman as Tateh, Alex Strange as the Little Boy, Mark Jacoby as Father, Steven Sutcliffe as Mother's Younger Brother, Judy Kaye as Emma Goldman, Lynnette Perry as Evelyn Nesbit, Lea Michele as the Little Girl, Conrad McLaren as Grandfather/Foreman, Jim Corti as Harry Houdini, David Mucci as Willie Conklin, and Tommy Hollis as Booker T. Washington. Rounding out the cast were Shaun Amyot, Darlene Bel Grayson, Kevin Bogue, Sondra M. Bonito, Rod Campbell, Jamie Chandler-Torns, Larry Daggett, Ralph Deaton, Rodrick Dixon, Bernard Dotson, Donna Dunmire, Adam Dyer, Duane Martin Foster, Patty Goble, Colton Green, Elisa Heinsohn, Anne Kanengeiser, Jeffrey Kuhn, Keith LaMelle Thomas, Joe Langworth, Joe Locarro, Anne L.
