The 20th anniversary Lincoln Center Festival kicks off July 13 featuring artists and ensembles from seven countries in 49 dance, music and theatre performances across the Lincoln Center campus. The event features the Globe Theatre of London’s acclaimed production of The Merchant of Venice, starring Tony winner Jonathan Pryce (Game of Thrones, Miss Saigon), and directed by Jonathan Munby.
With Pryce in the role of Shylock, Phoebe Pryce stars alongside her father in the role of Jessica. The production is playing seven performances at the Rose Theater July 20-24, on a set that recreates the Globe stage.
The festival itself is scheduled to run through July 31. It launches with two international theatrical productions: Paradise Interrupted, created by Chinese American composer Huang Ruo and visual artist Jennifer Wen Ma, known her work on the opening and closing ceremonies at the 2008 Beijing Olympics; and a specially created performance by one of Japan's oldest Noh theatre companies, Kanze Noh Theatre, led by Kiyokazu Kanze.
Among the other theatre highlights is Takarazuka Chicago, presented by Takarazuka, Japan’s all-female musical revue troupe. The company casts women in every role in its unique interpretation of the long-running, Tony-winning show, which will play six performances only (July 20-24).
Tony-winning British choreographer Christopher Wheeldon returns to the New York stage with the National Ballet of Canada's version of The Winter’s Tale, designed by Bob Crowley with music by Joby Talbot. The production features silk effects by Basil Twist, lighting design by Natasha Katz and projection design by Daniel Brodie. Performances will run July 28-31at the David H. Koch Theater.
Paris’ renowned Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord returns to the festival with a staging of Moliere's Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, set to music by Jean-Baptiste Lully. The production is helmed by Denis Podalydès with costumes by Christian Lacroix. There will be five performances at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater (July 20-24).
