LA Opera will stage two free performances of Benjamin Britten’s Noah’s Flood featuring nearly 500 Los Angeles-based amateur performers. The show will be under the musical direction of James Conlon.
Noah’s Flood (Noye’s Fludde) will be presented May 6 at 4 PM and 7:30 PM at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, located at 555 West Temple Street, Los Angeles.
Leading the cast will be Patrick Blackwell as Noah, Milena Kitic as Mrs. Noah, and Jamieson K. Price as the Voice of God.
The musical production will also feature community performers from the LA Opera Orchestra, teachers from LA Opera's Opera for Educators, students from LA Opera's Opera Camp, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Choir, CalArts Community Arts Partnership, Colburn Community School of Performing Arts String Orchestra, East Los Angeles Performing Arts Magnet, Harvard Elementary, Hamilton High School Orchestra, Hollenbeck Palms Choralmania, the Masters Ringers of Lake Avenue Church, Narbonne High School, Pasadena Conservatory of Music, Performing Arts for All, Pueri Cantores San Gabriel Valley, Sacred Heart School Choir, Urban Voices Project, and the Zarzuela Project of LA Opera. Audience members will also have the opportunity to sing along to several hymns within the show.
Noah’s Flood is based off the Bible story in which God decides to flood the world to get rid of sin. Before the flood, God asks Noah to build an ark to save his family, as well as a pair of every living animal. After 40 days at sea, Noah sends a raven to look for dry land but it never returns. He then sends a dove which returns with an olive branch, symbolizing peace between God and man.
The production will have stage direction by Eli Villanueva, scenic design by Carolina Angulo, costume design by Paula Higgins, lighting design by Tantris Hernandez, projection design by Alisa Lapidus, sound design by Jon Gottlieb, and prop/puppet design by Melissa Ficociello.
