La MaMa has announced it will present the world premiere of Existentialism, with performances beginning February 23 at the company's Ellen Stewart Theatre. Opening night is set for February 26, and the run will continue through March 10. 

Director Anne Bogart is creating the new production, a part of Talking Band's 50th anniversary season. The work follows a couple who live in two small houses side by side, both close and apart. Each go about their daily routines, while grappling with creating a meaningful life in a world where the only certainty is the passage of time. Bogart will also direct.

The production will feature Ellen Maddow and Paul Zimet of Talking Band. Bogart previously collaborated with the pair 35 years ago on No Plays, No Poetry, for which she received her first Obie award

“Anne brings a sense of excitement, adventure, and curiosity to the creative process,” Maddow and Zimet said in a joint statement. “Her directorial style and personality combine an unusual combination of clarity and confidence in her vision with an openness to being inspired by what others bring to the process. In working with Anne, we felt challenged and encouraged to explore deeper, to be more daring, and to have more fun. We loved working with Anne 35 years ago on No Plays, No Poetry and knew that working with her again would throw us off balance in the most positive way.”

Founded in 1974 by Zimet, Maddow, and Tina Shepard, Talking Band has created over 50 new works illuminating the extraordinary dimensions of everyday life. The group is a resident company at La MaMa, and has performed at numerous other Off-Broadway venues. Talking Band's 50th anniversary season began with the world premiere of The Following Evening at PAC NYC, and will continue in May with Shimmer and Herringbone at Mabou Mines' Second Floor Theater.
