Baltimore Center Stage is teaming up with ArtsCentric to present a new production of Regina Taylor's Crowns, directed by ArtsCentric Artistic Director and Broadway Caroline, Or Change and Come From Away star Kevin S. McAllister. The revival will play BCS' Pearlstone Theatre beginning February 11, 2023, and run through March 5, with opening night set for February 16.

The musical play, adapted from Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry's book, explores Black history and identity through the eyes of a young Black woman who visits her aunt in the South following the murder of her brother. A variety of hats become the jumping-off point for a number of stories, concerning everything from funerals and baptisms to African rituals. The work premiered in a co-production between New Jersey's McCarter Theatre and Off-Broadway's Second Stage Theatre, both of which presented it in 2002. The New York production won seven 2003 Audelco Awards, including Musical Production of the Year.

McAllister will be joined on the creative team by music director Cedric D. Lyles, music supervisor Nathan Scavilla, choreographer Shalyce Hemby, scenic designer Emily Lotz, lighting designer Mike Durst, costume designer Lawrence Boggs, Jr., sound designer Keith Person, prop manager Robert Poole, and stage manager Jordan Ross. Casting is to be announced.

"This hilariously touching musical is a celebration of Black history, heritage, and the iconic fashions that make up the Black church, and we've got seven performers who are going to blow your minds," says McAllister. "The church community in Baltimore is huge, and we can't wait to celebrate them. The amount of fun we are about to have on that stage will be one for the ages, and we can't wait to see all your smiling faces in the lobby after the show."

Tickets are available at CenterStage.org.
