Kate Douglas’ play The Apiary officially opens Off-Broadway at Second Stage Theatre February 13 after beginning previer January 31 at the Tony Kiser Theater. Directed by Kate Whoriskey, the piece is the centerpiece of Second Stage's inaugural Next Stage Festival. The extended run will continue through March 3.

The Apiary stars Obie winner April Matthis (The Piano Lesson, Toni Stone), Lucille Lortel nominee Carmen M. Herlihy (Bachelorette), Nimene Wureh (That Damn Michael Che, Inside Amy Schumer), and Emmy, SAG, and Golden Globe nominee Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black, A Month in the Country).

Set 22 years in the future, two lab assistants put a plan in motion to change the world, with the help of a few unusual volunteers.

The Apiary was previously a part of the 2022 Judith Champion Reading Series. The New Play Development at Second Stage is supported by a grant from the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust. This season is supported by a grant from the Howard Gilman Foundation.
