The Phantom of the Opera continues its record pace, setting new long-run totals for Broadway every night. It will play its 11,412th performance July 2. It still has almost 14 years to go before it passes the all-time U.S. long-run record holder, The Fantasticks, which played 17,162 during its original Off-Broadway run.
The Broadway revival of Chicago recently played its 7,700th performance, having surpassed Cats' total of 7,485 last year.
However, coming up quickly is The Lion King, which will play its 7,350th performance later this month.
Mamma Mia!, which is scheduled to close in September, will hit 5,650 this weekend. It will be the eighth longest-running show in Broadway history.
Several other current shows are breaking longstanding old records. The Book of Mormon stands at 1,782 performances tonight, having recently surpassed original runs of Hair, The Wiz and La Cage aux Folles.
Kinky Boots (934) and Matilda The Musical (928) have now run longer than Bells Are Ringing, The Color Purple and Carousel, and are closing in on The Odd Couple, Sunset Boulevard and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum later this summer.
