Red Bull Theater is partnering with French Institute Alliance Française for an in-person and streamed reading of Jean Racine's Phèdre, newly translated by Rob Melrose. Lanise Antoine Shelley will helm, with the performance set for February 20 at FIAF Florence Gould Hall in NYC. The evening will stream live February 20 and on demand February 21–26.
Tony winner Jennifer Ehle will lead the cast in the title role, alongside Stephanie Berry, Robert Cuccioli, Mister Fitzgerald, Allen Gilmore, Jacqueline Nwabueze, AhDream Smith, and Sarin Monae West.
Considered Racine's masterpiece, Phèdre follows its titular character, a mother and wife, who finds herself with troubling desires for her stepson. The new translation by Melrose, artistic director of the Alley Theatre in Houston, Texas, premiered in 2017 and has been praised for its authenticity and faithfulness adapting Racine's original text for modern English-speaking audiences.
The reading is part of Red Bull's Revelation Readings series.
