Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis promises concerts, education events, broadcasts, tours, and a diverse line-up of guest artists. This season, JALC's 24th, (7th in its home at Frederick P. Rose Hall) brings two new series: Visionary Voices, featuring Bobby McFerrin, Dianne Reeves, and Sweet Honey In The Rock, and Jazz & Popular Song, curated by Michael Feinstein.
This season embodies what Marsalis calls "total jazz," taking listeners through the continuum of American jazz to what is being played around the world today; from New Orleans native sons Terence Blanchard and Branford Marsalis and the music of the Jazz Age, as performed by the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, to the spicy Afro polyrhythms of Latin America and the sultry soulfulness of the great Nancy Wilson and perennial favorite Dianne Reeves, as well as a first-time collaboration with legend Chick Corea.
Inexhaustible jazz icon, drummer Roy Haynes, delivers the first show of the season September 25 in Rose Theater. Haynes' early apprenticeships with Charlie Parker and Sarah Vaughan led to decades of Haynes as the rhythmic pulse of hundreds of classic recordings and made Haynes a brilliant bandleader and nurturer of young talent. This show features the GrammyÔÎ-winner in two settings: with his own current Fountain of Youth Band, and with an all-star supergroup including saxophonist Kenny Garrett, pianist Danilo Perez, bassist Dave Holland, and Wynton Marsalis.
The following month, Nancy Wilson, perhaps the most legendary living female jazz singer today, brings her magic to The Allen Room on October 8 and 9. She will reprise selections from her classic recordings with Cannonball Adderley and George Shearing.
The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis makes its season debut with the Afro-Cuban Celebration October 21 _23 in Rose Theater, hosted by orchestra bassist Carlos Henriquez. The show will explore early Afro-Cuban jazz breakthrough hits, the mambo and the cha-cha, and the enduring legacy of the explosive musical pioneers Mario Bauza, Machito, Chano Pozo, and Cachao.
That's just a small selection of the start of next season in Frederick P. Rose Hall. Don't forget to make regular visits to the worldwide destination jazz club, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola for weekly world-class jazz acts. Jazz at Lincoln Center looks forward to welcoming you.
