Awards Hell's Kitchen Wins Best Musical Theater Album at 2025 Grammy Awards

Broadway's Alicia Keys musical Hell's Kitchen has received the award for Best Best Musical Theater Album at the Grammy Awards. The 67th Annual Grammy Awards are currently being held February 2, 2025 at Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

Listed as nominees for Hell's Kitchen are principal vocalists Shoshana Bean, Brandon Victor Dixon, Kecia Lewis and Maleah Joi Moon; producers Adam Blackstone, Alicia Keys, and Tom Kitt; and composer and lyricist Keys. Other nominees for Best Musical Theater Album included Merrily We Roll AlongThe Notebook, The OutsidersSuffs, and The Wiz

Winners in the theatrical realm also included the soundtrack to Maestro, the 2023 biographical Leonard Bernstein film, which took home the award for Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media. The soundtrack of the 2023 film adaptation of The Color Purple was also nominated. 

Hell's Kitchen officially opened at the Shubert Theatre April 20 after beginning previews March 28—read the reviews here. Michael Greif directs the work, which features choreography by Camille A. Brown.

The production features music and lyrics by Keys and a book by Kristoffer Diaz. Inspired by the 15-time Grammy winner's life, the story centers on 17-year-old Ali and her mother, sharing a cramped apartment near Times Square. Ali wants to live out her NYC dream, but Mom is scared her daughter will repeat her own mistakes. 

The current cast is led by Wicked star Jessica Vosk as Jersey, Phillip Johnson Richardson (The Wiz) as Knuck, Tony winner Maleah Joi Moon as Ali, Brandon Victor Dixon (Hamilton) as Davis, and Tony winner Kecia Lewis (Ain't Misbehavin') as Miss Liza Jane. Casting is by Heidi Griffiths and Kate Murray.

Greif reassembled his complete Off-Broadway creative team for the Broadway bow. The music team includes music director Lily Ling and orchestrators Adam Blackstone and Tom Kitt with arrangements by Keys and Blackstone. The creative team also includes scenic designer Robert Brill, costume designer Dede Ayite, lighting designer Natasha Katz, sound designer Gareth Owen, projection designer Peter Nigrini, hair and wig designer Mia Neal, and makeup designer Michael Clifton. Foresight Theatrical is general manager, and Danny Maly serves as production stage manager.

The Broadway production was nominated for 13 2024 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. It won Tonys for Moon and Lewis' performances.
