Awards Hell's Kitchen, Babbitt, Untitled Unauthorized Hunter Thompson Musical, More Receive Edgerton Foundation Awards

The cash awards grant extra development and rehearsal time for new works with their entire creative teams.

The first and second round recipients of the Edgerton Foundation's 2023-2024 New Play Awards have been revealed, representing a cumulative total of $722,000 given to 12 productions to allow for extra development and rehearsal time with the entire creative team.

The awarded productions are listed below:


Administered by Theatre Communications Group, the awards have distributed more than $17 million to 533 productions of its 18 years, enabling many works to schedule a world premiere and 38 Broadway bows. Six awarded works have gone on to win Pulitzer Prizes for Drama, including The Hot Wing KingCost of LivingHamiltonThe FlickWater by the Spoonful, and Next to Normal.

"As we navigate the compounding crises facing our theatre ecology, the Edgerton Foundation's forward-thinking commitment to new plays is more vital than ever," says TCG Executive Director Teresa Eyring. "As theatres rebuild their audiences, the Foundation's backing of extended rehearsal periods is a true game-changer. Recipients can ensure that new plays receive the necessary resources—not only for successful inaugural productions, but for numerous subsequent performances in theatres nationwide."
