The Tony-winning Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the first Harry Potter story to be presented on stage, plays its 1,000th performance at Broadway's Lyric Theatre May 13 at 7 PM. The hit production, which officially opened April 22, 2018, also recently celebrated its fifth anniversary on Broadway.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, named by the Guinness World Records as the highest-grossing non-musical play in Broadway history with over $270 million total sales and over 2 million tickets sold, has received 60 major honors.
Written by Jack Thorne from a story devised by J.K. Rowling, Thorne, and production director John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered in London's West End in 2016, winning nine Oliviers, including Best New Play; and made the jump to Broadway in 2018, winning six Tony Awards, including Best Play.
The work was originally designed as two full-length two-act plays, though the Broadway production was streamlined into one two-act play when it reopened following the 2020 shutdown. Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has also opened productions in Melbourne, Toronto, and Tokyo.
The play follows Harry Potter’s head-strong son Albus, who befriends the son of his fiercest rival, Draco Malfoy. The friendship sparks an unbelievable new journey for them all—with the power to change the past and future forever.
The production features movement by Steven Hoggett, scenic design by Christine Jones, costumes by Katrina Lindsay, music and arrangements by Imogen Heap, lighting by Neil Austin, sound by Gareth Fry, illusions and magic by Jamie Harrison, and music supervision and arrangements by Martin Lowe. Casting is by Jim Carnahan.
The Broadway cast currently includes Steve Haggard as Harry Potter, Angela Reed as Ginny Potter, Joel Meyers as Albus Potter, David Abeles as Ron Weasley, Jenny Jules as Hermione Granger, Maya Olivia Thomas as Rose Granger-Weasley, Aaron Bartz as Draco Malfoy, Erik Christopher Peterson as Scorpius Malfoy, and Imani Jade Powers as Delphi Diggory.
