British singer-songwriter Morrissey took the stage at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre for seven performances May 2–11 as the inaugural act of the In Residence on Broadway series at the venue this summer. The Smiths frontman grossed a total of $1,881,374—92.32 percent of its potential—playing to an audience at 96.4 percent capacity.
The series will next host Yanni, followed by Mel Brooks, Regina Spektor, Criss Angel, and the Beatles tribute Rain.
Coming out above Morrisseywere two usual suspects: The Lion King and Hamilton, the only two shows to gross above $2 million in the week ending May 12 (the latter hitting $3,139,022).
Three of this year’s Tony-nominated musicals also reached seven figures this past week: Ain’t Too Proud—The Life and Times of the Temptations ($1,494,459), Tootsie ($1,409,488), and Hadestown ($1,097,115).
Filmed in 2023, the one-night-only event featured Brian Stokes Mitchell, Audra McDonald, Peter Friedman, and more from the Ahrens and Flaherty musical's original cast.
Surrounded by period-accurate, 19th-century holiday decorations lit via candlelight, the 70-minute production is based on Dickens' own script of the classic.
