Maysles, who passed away at age 88 March 6, was the pioneer of the evolution of the documentary film medium. His revolutionary 1975 "Grey Gardens" later inspired an HBO film and Broadway musical. Grey Gardens played the Walter Kerr Theatre from October 2006-July 2007, playing a total of 307 performances. The production, which was nominated for ten Tony Awards and won three, was helmed by Michael Greif and starred Christine Ebersole and Mary Louise Wilson, who both won Tony Awards for their performances.
Loosely based on the "Grey Gardens" documentary, the musical told the story of Edith Bouvier Beale and "Little" Edie, the eccentric aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.
