New Yiddish Rep is set to host the first revival in decades of God of Vengeance in Yiddish. The play is at the center of Paula Vogel and Rebecca Taichman’s Indecent, which is currently playing an acclaimed engagement at the Vineyard Theatre through June 19.
Sholem Asch’s God of Vengeance was responsible for presenting the first lesbian kiss on Broadway, in 1923.
The landmark show will receive two staged readings, directed by Tony nominee Eleanor Reissa (Those Were the Days), as part of the Jewish Plays Project’s OPEN: The Festival of New Jewish Theater at the 14th Street Y, June 25 and 26.
The show tells the story of a brothel owner’s attempt to marry off his daughter to lead a more religious life, only to have her drawn back into the world he tried to shield her from. The cast features Shane Baker, David Mandelbaum and Eleanor Reissa; further casting will be announced.
New Yiddish Rep plans to present a fully staged production later this year.
