The Tony-nominated dance-filled Gershwin musical An American in Paris plays Massachusetts' Cape Playhouse August 3-13.
Emmy winner Al Blackstone directs and choreographs the production with musical direction by Garrett Taylor.
The cast is led by Leigh-Ann Esty as Lise Dassin and Josh Drake as Jerry Mulligan with Bruce Landry as Henri Baurel, Manna Nichols as Milo Davenport, Barrett Riggins as Adam Hochburg, and Jennifer Smith as Madame Baurel.
The stage incarnation of the classic Gershwin film arrived on Broadway in March 2015 after a Paris world premiere. The musical, inspired by the Oscar-winning film of the same name, features a score by George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin and a book by Craig Lucas. The Broadway production played 29 previews and 623 regular performances before closing October 9, 2016.
The score of An American in Paris includes the songs “I Got Rhythm,” “Liza,” “’S Wonderful,” “But Not For Me,” and “I’ll Build a Stairway to Paradise,” as well as orchestral music including “Concerto in F,” “Second Prelude,” “Second Rhapsody/Cuban Overture,” and “An American In Paris.”
An American in Paris received 12 Tony nominations, winning awards for Best Choreography, Best Orchestrations, Best Set Design, and Best Lighting Design. The musical also won four Drama Desk Awards; four Outer Critics Circle Awards including Best Musical; the Drama League Award for Best Musical; three Fred and Adele Astaire Awards; and two Theatre World Awards.
“Fundamental to the appeal and what makes An American In Paris so special is that while inspired by an iconic film, it has been so skillfully adapted from film to stage,” said Tony winner and Cape Playhouse Artistic Director David Elliott. “The choice to change the setting from the 1950s to a post-war Paris emerging from the shadows of the occupation brings an optimism and a world of possibility that allows for brilliant storytelling. And then there’s that score! With the timeless genius of George and Ira Gershwin you have the makings of an incredible night at the theatre."
