Streaming Filmed Performance of What You Are Now Starring Pose’s Sonnie Brown to Stream for Free via Ensemble Studio Theatre

Brown earned a Drama Desk nomination for her performance as Chantrea in Sam Chanse’s new play about memories, identity, and 1970s Cambodia.

Presented by Ensemble Studio Theatre, The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and The Civilians, a filmed performance from the world premiere of Sam Chanse’s new work what you are now will be available to stream for free September 8–25.

The work originally had an in-person world premiere run at Ensemble Studio Theatre’s Curt Dempster Theater this past spring, with followed its 2015 commission by the EST/Sloan Project, a 2017 reading, and development with The Civilians and EST/Sloan Project from 2018–2020.

Directed by The Civilians Artistic Director Steve Cosson, the cast features Sonnie Brown (Pose), Curran Connor (Dido of Idaho), Emma Kikue (God Said This), Robert Lee Leng (Awkwafina is Nora from Queens), and Pisay Pao (Z Nation). Brown earned a Drama Desk nomination for her performance.

The play follows passionate and young Pia, a researcher interested in new ways of healing the mind from traumatic memories. Rooted in her own family’s history, Pia must navigate the memories and subsequent discoveries which come to light when her mother, Chantrea, is urged to testify about her experiences during the violence of 1970s Cambodia.

The creative team includes scenic designer Riw Rakkulchon, costume designer An-lin Dauber, lighting designer Jeanette Oi-Suk Yew, sound designer Leah Gelpe, and props designer Caitlyn Murphy. Original music is by Sophy Him. Soriya K. Chum served as dramaturg, with Fran Acuña-Almiron as production stage manager and Bianca Boller as stage manager during filming. Casting is by JZ Casting.
