The new musical Reincarnation Blues, based on Michael Poore's fantasy novel of the same name, will play a March 31 concert at Drom in New York City. With a book by Laura Zlatos (Happily After Ever) and music and lyrics by indie-rock musicians Coyle Girelli and Ben Thornewill, the work follows a soul who is reincarnated through 10,000 lifetimes to be with his one true love: Death herself.
The cast will include Eleri Ward (Gatsby), Morgan Siobhan Green (Hadestown, Be More Chill), and Jeff Taylor. Additional artists will be announced at a later date.
“After reading Reincarnation Blues during the pandemic lockdown, I was immediately hooked—each page spoke to me like a song," Girelli said in a statement. "Happily, Ben and Laura had the same reaction to it. We’re thrilled to bring this funny, joyful and soulful experience to the stage.”
“There’s no thrill greater than seeing your book zoom to life in music," added Poore. "What this exceptional creative team has done with Reincarnation Blues is simply electrifying.”
Reincarnation Blues was originally developed in part at the 2023 Rhinebeck Writers Retreat, and was a 2024 Semi-Finalist for the O’Neill National Music Theater Conference. The musical will also have workshop reading performances April 24 at London's The Other Palace.
Josh Sobel of Future Home and Michael Graf are producing, alongside executive producer and general manager Lisa Dozier Shacket of LDK Productions.
